What’s Happening at University Baptist Church 1-21-10
In worship this Sunday, January 24, Pastor will be speaking on “Fixing What Is Broken”.
It is based on scripture from Matthew 17:1-13.
Peter, James and John were led by Jesus up a high mountain to witness an awe-inspiring event. What should have
been a time of worship and learning about God became a time of confusion and frustration. Their experience in
the presence of God is much like our own.
We enter the life of faith with great expectations. We want and expect to be inspired. As our lives continue to
unfold, we sometimes find confusion and frustration where we expected a mountaintop experience. As with Peter,
James and John, so too in our lives, are we able to recover when we put first things first.
Sunday School classes for all ages meet every Sunday at 11:30 AM. Please plan to join us each week as we
seek to grow in God’s knowledge for our lives.
The Central Region ABC-MI Annual Meeting will be held at First Baptist Church of Stockbridge on Saturday,
January 30. Anyone interested in attending, please see Pastor Pickens for a registration form and to arrange
transportation. Forms are due by January 26.
The UBC Annual Meeting will be held next Sunday, January 31. Many important items, including the budget,
will be discussed at this meeting. If you are a regular attendee, but not a member, we welcome and value your
input and ask you to participate in the discussions. Please plan to attend as we make decisions that will affect our
church for the coming year.
Prior to the UBC Annual Meeting next Sunday, we will gather for a potluck lunch.
Those whose last name starts with A through M are asked to bring a salad.
If your last name starts with N through Z, please provide a dessert.
Please plan to share in fellowship as we celebrate another year in the UBC family.
On Saturday, February 6, Redeemer Fellowship in Monroe is hosting a workshop entitled "The Power of
Servant Leadership" from 8:30 AM to noon. Jesus described the essence of leadership as serving. Servant
Leadership involves serving others by identifying and meeting their legitimate needs (as opposed to wants) and
seeking their greatest good.
Jim Hunter will lead this paradigm-/ life-changing workshop. Jim is the author of two internationally best-selling
books: The Servant and The World’s Most Powerful Leadership Principle. His books have been translated into
fourteen (14) languages and have sold over 3.25 million copies worldwide. Jim's clients include many of the
world’s most admired organizations including American Express, Best Buy, Nestlé, Microsoft, Procter & Gamble
and the United States Air Force, Army & Navy.
Pastor and several others from our congregation will be attending. Please join us whether student, teacher,
manager, or grandparent -- All will benefit because we all influence others daily. A freewill offering will be taken
with the proceeds to benefit Nightlife Ministries in Bangkok. Please see Jacquie Cooke regarding car pooling.
Calling All Singers! – The spring choir season will begin with a lunch, distribution of music and the first
rehearsal on Sunday, February 7, after Sunday School. Bring a singing friend and become a part of the extended
worship team.
Libby Eberly has graciously agreed to head up our coffee and meal planning for 2010. Please see Libby soon
to sign up for hosting a coffee time. She will also be posting a sheet on the kitchen door to record any
supplies/paper products that need to be purchased. If you use the last of anything, please record it on this sheet.
Put your game face on and come to UBC on Saturday, February 13, at 3:00 PM. We'll play a variety of
games for all ages. At 5:30 PM we'll order some pizza and recount our triumphs at the game tables. Please see
Gina or Janet S. to sign up to attend and discuss what game(s) you might bring. More details will follow as the
day approaches.
Students – Are you looking for an Alternative Spring Break opportunity? UBC is providing an Urban
Immersion event in the Detroit area during the week of March 7 – 13. Details are available from Pastor Pickens or
Becky Murthum.
Kids Hope USA - Following up on our November congregational discussions, we are in the process of completing
the requirements to establish a formal mentoring relationship with Marble Elementary School in East Lansing.
Jacquie Cooke has been identified as the director for UBC and will be attending training outside Chicago in
February. Our hope is to have the program up and running in March. Stay tuned for opportunities to be involved
in this exciting ministry.

Update and news from our IM missionaries and partners in Haiti:

epicenter southwest of Port-au-Prince. Cooperative Baptists are participating in this effort. Nancy James, at Cap
Haitien in the north, is maintaining communication with Steve and his partners.
Kristy Engel and our Dominican Baptist partners are in Port-au-Prince with a 75-person team (including 30
medical personnel). The group includes Ketley and Vital Pierre, IM missionaries who have come to Haiti from
Nicaragua. Kristy is providing administrative oversight of 3 clinics in which the medical team is working. Non-
medical staff on this team will distribute food away from the clinics. Kristy plans to bring in additional teams of
doctors, nurses and nurse practitioners on January 26th and February 2nd.
Madeline Flores and Dominican partners are providing medical care, shelter and relief supplies to quake
victims being brought to the Contreras Hospital in Santo Domingo, DR.
IM is closely coordinating with the Haitian Baptist Convention and the Christian University of Northern Haiti
(UCNH). IM partners in Haiti are providing medical care and relief supplies at the partially finished hospital at
Quartier Morin. IM is planning for additional teams and staffing: Herb Rogers, Vital and Ketley Pierre, David and
Laura Parajon, Madeline Flores, Adalia Gutierrez and Vic Gordon.
Pray for the people of Haiti and for these who have been mentioned and for all those who are giving
assistance and aid to the victims of the earthquake.
